…i need some basic help getting set up with adwords — how much does it cost to have someone set it up and maintain? I can maintain myself once set up, but need someone to show me how – I know it’s not hard to get going, but I have looked at it before and I didn’t want to have to teach myself all over again — thanks in advance!

Some companies charge a lot for setting up an adwords campaign, and even charge you per click too. It is very simple to set your own campaign up, it may take a few hours but will save you a lot in the long run.
You need to choose your keywords, you can do this from the Google keyword suggestion tool. From here you work out how much each visitor is worth to your site, and establish an amount you wish to pay for each new visitor. So if a visitor is worth $1, and you are paying 50c per visitor, you will profit 50c from each new visitor. However, the more you pay, the higher you will rank, and the more traffic you will get.
So back to our example of the 50c, if this only produces 100 visitors a day for you, then that will be $50 profit. But if you bid perhaps 75c, your profit will only be 25c per visitor, but you may get 1000 visitors a day, or $250 profit. So you need to find the right balance, and tweak it effectively. It is a lot easier to compete when you do not also have to pay an SEO firm on top of that.
I hope i will cover all the questions:
- Set up. This depends on the amount of keywords and amount of landing pages. A professional company will choose the right keywords and improve the web site content (or create the landing pages). The higher the score, the lower the price you pay
- Maintain – You need to maintain the negative keywords; improve the page score; maintain CTR etc. If you are not maintaining the account, you are just burning money. Cost should be 15%-20% of the money spent with the Adwords campaign.
